Designer Drug Testing Available

  • Synthetic Cannabinoids (Spice, K2, Fake Pot)

Synthetic Cannabinoids (Spice, K2, Fake Pot)

Synthetic Cannabinoids are designer chemicals that mimic the effects of THC, the active component of marijuana. However, these compounds are structurally unrelated to THC and cannot be detected by standard marijuana drug tests. For this reason, use of these products has become very popular among drug users seeking a "high" without the danger of being detected by drug testing programs.

    Method of use:

Spice products have been marketed as household aromatics, fragrances or incenses and are typically labeled “Not for Human Consumption”; but at least some of the products contain compounds that have the same pharmacological effects as cannabinoids (marijuana and Hashish). Therefore, these products can be smoked or otherwise ingested, and users experience effects very similar to those of marijuana.

    Regulatory status:

On November 24, 2010, the Drug Enforcement Agency temporarily placed five synthetic cannabinoids into schedule I of the Controlled Substance Act: JWH-018, JWH-073, JWH-200, CP-47, 497, and cannabicyclohexanol. The ban went into legal effect on March 1, 2011.

    Prevalence:

The use of synthetic cannbinoids is rapidly increasing. Poison control centers in the United States have reported more calls related to synthetic cannabinoids during the first six months of 2011 than all of 2010.

    Laboratory testing:

Aegis now performs tests for 21 metabolites of 11 synthetic cannabinoids using LC/MS/MS with a 1 ng/ml threshold.

What ARE the different names being used?:

Most synthetic cannabinoids are marketed as drug-laced herbal incense products called “Spice,” “K2,” “Black Mamba,” “K3” “potpourri,” among many others.

  • Bath Salts

    Bath Salts

Bath salts, scientifically known as synthetic cathinones, are the newest designer drugs to emerge in the drug abuse scene. They possess stimulant effects similar to ecstasy (MDMA) and are often called "fake cocaine." "Bath salts" are named such to escape attention as an illicit substance. They are not hygiene products but rather are intended for substance abuse - although packaging typically includes a token "Not for Human Consumption" label.

    Method of use:

The routes of administration are reported to be oral, injection, smoking, snorting and less often by atomization (similar to vaporizing). Worse outcomes are usually associated with injection or inhalation routes.

    Regulatory status:

Mephedrone is an analogue methcathinine, which is Classified as a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances ACT (CSA).

    Prevalence:

Law enforcement officials report increasing use, especially among youth. It has been suggested that individuals who abuse synthetic cathinone products may exhibit more extreme behaviors related to their addictions.

    Laboratory testing:

Aegis has developed a test for synthetic cathinones using LC/MS/MS screening and confirmation methods, with a threshold of 25 ng/ml.
